Summer Hospitality: Building a "Digital Front Porch" for Moving Season
When we think of summer, we think of vacations. But demographically, summer is also something else: Moving Season.
Between May and August, millions of Americans relocate for new jobs, school districts, or a change of pace. Families are unpacking boxes in new neighborhoods, and—crucially for us—they are quietly looking for new church homes online.
While your regular attenders might be at the beach, your digital spaces are actively being scouted by newcomers. We cannot allow our digital hospitality to go on vacation just because our staff is taking some well-deserved PTO.
Your website and social media channels are your "Digital Front Porch." Here is how to make sure the porch light is on for new movers this summer:
1. Audit the "Plan Your Visit" Experience Put yourself in the shoes of someone who just moved to your city. Look at your website on your phone right now.
Are your summer service hours explicitly clear? (If you drop to one service in July, make sure the website doesn't still say you have two).
Is the address easy to find and click to open in Google Maps?
Are your summer events (like VBS or community picnics) featured prominently?
2. The Welcome Video Pivot Replace the highly produced, glossy homepage video with something much more authentic for the summer. Record a raw, friendly selfie-video from your lead pastor.
The Script: "Hey, if you just moved to [Your City] this summer, welcome! We know how exhausting unpacking is and how lonely a new city can feel. We’d love to save you a seat, introduce you to some great people, and buy you a cup of coffee this Sunday."
This simple pivot blends digital outreach with a warm, physical invitation. Don't sleep on your digital assimilation this summer; the people God is bringing to your city are searching for community right now.
